Toppings:

cup
+ 2 T grated Gruyere or white cheddar cheese
Instructions
In a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker, add all the ingredients except the cheese. Stir to mix well.
Cover and cook on LOW for 8 hours. Remove the bay leaf.
Before serving, preheat the broiler. Divide the soup in between oven-proof bowls and top each bowl with 3 T cheese.
Place the bowls into the oven or broiler and broil for 3 minutes or until the cheese is melted and golden on top.
Serve immediately.
