Tequila Before Bed Helps With Weight Loss

CONFIRMED: 1 Tequila Shot Before Bed Helps You Lose Weight

One tequila, two tequila, three tequila…show those extra pounds the door!

The American Cancer Society researched the effects of tequila on blood glucose levels last year, sugars found in the plant that makes tequila can help lower your blood sugar. The sugars that naturally occurs in the agave plant are called agavins—not to be confused with agave syrup—and are non-digestible, so they won’t raise your blood sugar.

Agave syrup on the other hand is not an ideal sweetener for diabetics, people with insulin resistance, or anyone trying to avoid sugar for health purposes. Agave syrup is not much different than sugar.

Agazin, on the other hand, is a natural form of the sugar fructose called a fructan. This is the key difference. With fructan, the individual sugar molecules are linked together in long chains which make it a non-digestible dietary fiber that won’t raise blood sugar levels but does have a sweet flavor.

But the agave nectar has fructan that has been broken down into individual fructoses, like high fructose corn syrup, that the body can use, raising blood glucose levels and contributing to diabetes.

During the study linked above, researchers found that mice who’d been given a standard diet, and then drank water with agavins added, ended up eating less overall and had lower blood sugar levels than the others who hadn’t consumed agavins. What’s more, the mice consuming agavins also produced a hormone called GLP-1, which keeps the stomach full longer and produces insulin, leading researchers to believe that agavins could be beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes or struggling with weight-loss issues.
This hormone slowed digestion helping them feel fuller, so they ate less, lost weight, and had lower blood sugar levels compared with mice given other sugars and even aspartame. These studies need to be verified by human trials to look at the long term consequences of eating agavin. The only known downside to this sweetener is that it’s not as sweet, but its benefits could make eating a lot more fun for diabetics.

YAY Maragaritas For Everyone!

Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean you can start guzzling half-price happy hour Margaritas or Tequila Sunrises. Most tequila cocktail extras are loaded with high-fructose corn syrup, simple syrups, sugars, and a bunch of other crap that won’t help you lose weight.

BUT, perhaps it’s time to buy a nice tequila shot glass and sip on an ounce or 2 of your favorite chilled tequila instead of a glass of wine or beer.

Yup, that’s sea salt on the rim!

To be clear, alcohol is alcohol and isn’t ncessarily “healthy,” but it’s important to find a weight loss plan that you can enjoy and is sustainable. I love to drink tequila, but I know it can have consequences, so I make sure to eat healthy and drink water most of the time.
